MyTTC – Route Planning Website

A brilliant web application has been built and is available online.

Please check out MyTTC by clicking here.

You can type in any two addresses or intersections in Toronto and a time, and it will give you the fastest route between the locations during that time of day.

I must stress that this site is not affiliated with or funded by the government or TTC… and it is far superior to the TTC’s own schedules and maps.

Profits from Pollution

Canadian business won a fight against humanity, keeping it legal to export building products containing asbestos without labeling it as hazardous.

That’s right, the decision was not against ceasing the production of building materials containing chrysotile asbestos; but simply about the requirement of notifying importing governments (and companies using the products… and their employees).

As a building material, it is banned here; but it’s still OK for us to export it to developing nations. Catch the CBC article here.

Also…

The FDA said BPA is OK; but CBC reports recent reviews by the scientific community in the USA are starting to indicate a that the decision should go the other way.

Bisphenol-A is on Canada’s list of toxic substances. It mimics estrogen in the body, resulting in decreased fertility in females as well as effeminating characteristics or hermaphoditic features in males.

Highlander Ale: Coming soon to a pub near you….

South River, Ontario – October 13, 2008

On the way home from the cottage, we passed by the Highlander Brew Company premises that is now under construction. Owner, Brian Wilson (no relation to the other Brian Wilson) gave us a tour and told us all of his secret recipe. OK, well he gave us a tour.

Brian, we’re anxiously awaiting that inaugural batch of ale. Good luck!

Guard Your Banana

guard your banana

Originally uploaded by a virtual unknown

We were browsing the outfitter shops down by King/Spadina this Sunday and I stumbled upon (slipped on?) one of these: a Banana Guard

Apparently the company has begun making guards for round foods as well.

I feel that at this time it should be mentioned that a banana is an herb, not a fruit.

Obligatory link here:

Stay safe, wear a Banana Guard. They’re dishwasher safe.

Niagara – “Crush” Winery Tour

Jackson-Triggs Vineyard

On Saturday, a group of us went on a tour of four wineries in the

Niagara region. Niagara-on-the-Lake is a very quaint and beautiful town with a unique, rural, artisan feel.

The trip was a lot of fun. We went to four wineries in approximately 6.5 hours. The tour guide and the staff at each winery were all very helpful and friendly. From them, I learned some of the key components behind tasting and evaluating wine during the tastings.

Later that night, we went out in Niagara Falls for a little fun.

My parts came last week from BestDirect.ca via Purolator Ground. That was pretty fast for a shipment from British Columbia with free shipping.

Here is the motherboard, an Intel “Fly Creek” DG45FC board with integrated X4500HD video (including DVI and HDMI outputs).

I have coupled this with the Intel Core2 Duo E8400 – 3.0 GHz/1333 FSB/6 MB Cache. When I find a slimline Blu-Ray drive, I want this to be powerful enough to play 1080p H.264 content, with one hand tied behind its back.

Spadina Ave

The Double Dragons in this shot are in the median of Spadina Ave, near Dundas. Funny thing is that in the years I have been going there, I don’t remember seeing them.

Strange how I noticed them when I was out looking for things to take photos of; but not otherwise.

Sometimes I think being unfamiliar with some place makes you see things that people who live there may not notice.

Sleepy Swans

Originally uploaded by a virtual unknown

I went to the Lantern Festival, after work on Friday night. It was a lot of fun and I managed to snap this shot of swans silhouetted over the reflection of lanterns on the water. It was really cold, so if you go, dress warm. I wore a toque.
